Applying a Cloned Topology with PowerShell
In today’s lesson we presume you have set up your new topology in a variable – say $clone, and you have used
or its equivalents for the other roles.
Remember – the Index component needs special treatment.
If you wish to change which server is being used for your Index role – as opposed to adding an additional Index component – you have to be careful.
If you create and activate a new topology in which your previous Index server component is missing, SharePoint delete the index files, forcing a full crawl.
To avoid this, first, make a cloned topology where the new server is added as an addition Index component and make the topology active.
Then go for coffee.
When you get back, make second clone of the topology, and remove your original Index server.
To make the cloned topology the active one, use:
Set-SPEnterpriseSearchTopology -Identity $clone (See http://1jj.uk/spsettopology)
