Little Gotchas – 05
Today’s lesson: travel light, migrate faster!
Inventory your existing SharePoint estate before you decide on a migration approach.
Catalogue the number of Farms, Web Applications, Site Collections, Subsites, Libraries, Files, List Items. Measure the volume of data across all of these.
Gather details about how Version History is used. Identify candidates for throwing away the history, or keeping fewer versions.
Analyse your data: go to the users and identify what – if anything – can be thrown away.
Look for redundant Site Collections, Subsites, Libraries and Folders.
The aim is to take with you all that is necessary, whilst leaving behind everything you don’t need.
Remember, for each thing you need to migrate, you will pay:
For the time it takes you to configure your migration.
For the time it takes you to migrate it.
For the bandwidth during the migration.
For the storage space in SharePoint Online.
And often you’ll pay your migration tool vendor for each gigabyte you move.
