Modern UI
If you’re moving from SharePoint 2010 or 2013 on premise to SharePoint Online, or if you were an early adopter of Office 365, you might find the Modern UI of SharePoint Online and SharePoint 2016 somewhat challenging.
It’s not that the new user experience is difficult to use. It’s not. In fact, it’s lovely, clean, crisp and fast.
The problem is, it’s not ubiquitous yet. There are gaps.
With 2016 on-premise, the Modern Experience is limited to the App Launcher or “waffle”, and, if you have Feature Pack 2 installed, Modern Web Parts on classic pages.
You’re probably going to have to wait for next year’s SharePoint 2019 for full Modern capabilities on premise.
Even in SharePoint Online, there are huge gaps right now. Microsoft is clearly working hard to close those gaps. The Office 365 Roadmap web site shows a lot of what they have planned, and how much they have already delivered.
Regardless, if you’ve turned away from Modern Pages and Modern List and Library views in SharePoint Online, it’s definitely time to have another look.
Tomorrow, we’ll talk about how to navigate the customisation choices in SharePoint Online Modern UI.
